Canine Patrol
The Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department has an excellent K-9 Unit dedicated to implement an aggressive drug interdiction program. The deputies and their dogs (teams) spend hundreds of hours each year training to enable them to perform their duties to protect the residents of Doña Ana County. The K-9 teams have helped detect and locate drugs, find weapons used in crimes, and apprehend dangerous suspects. The K-9 Patrol is an integral part of the professional law enforcement team that serves in the Doņa Ana County Sheriff's Department.
Community Policing
The Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department has embraced the philosophy of community policing by entering into partnership agreements with the residents of the communities we serve. Our mission is to take a problem-solving approach to reducing and deterring crime. Twenty deputies have just been added to the unit, bringing the number of community police officers to twenty-eight. The Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office is utilizing bicycles and four-wheelers to have closer contact with the residents we serve.
Criminal Investigations Division
The Doņa Ana County Sheriff's Department Criminal-Investigations Division (CID) handles most felony-level criminal investigations. CID is comprised of one Captain, one Lieutenant, two Sergeants, 12 Investigators and the Mobile Crime-Scene Unit
Some examples of crimes handled by this division are:
- Crimes Against Persons: including homicides, aggravated robberies, sexual assaults and kidnappings
- Crimes Against Children: including child abuse and tracking registered sexual offenders
- Gang-Related Crimes: including drive-by shootings, apprehension of fugitives and extortion claims
- Financial Crimes: including white-collar crimes, public-integrity crimes and cyber crimes
- Death Investigations: including unattended deaths, suicides and cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
- Domestic-Violence crimes
- Animal-Cruelty crimes
- Property Crimes
CSI investigators respond to crime scenes and complete preliminary and follow-up investigations, then they conduct research to establish common links between crimes, and then they seek to identify and arrest violent offenders. Afterward, they record and track statistical information on criminal activity.
Legal Division
The Legal Division of the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office makes sure that all of the reports, paperwork, and evidence generated and collected by the field officers is recorded and filed to be available when needed. The amount of documentation and evidence generated by cases is astronomical. The Legal staff also administers civil documents from the judicial system in Doña Ana County.
Patrol Division
The Patrol Division is the backbone of the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department. A deputy sheriff's duties include serving the community, safeguarding lives and property, protecting the innocent, keeping the peace, and ensuring the rights of all to liberty, equality, and justice. Deputies patrol the county ready to answer 911 calls at a moment's notice, on the lookout for criminal activity, and addressing safety issues. Patrol deputies enforce federal, state, and local laws, and protect the individual citizen's Constitutional rights. Patrol is one of the most dangerous of police duties, but it is necessary for enforcement of the law and deterence to crime.
Traffic Division
The Division is comprised of five deputies specially trained in crash investigation. The Traffic division recently escorted President George W. Bush from the Las Cruces airport to his campaign site and back providing him protection during his entire stay.
